SEQUINS
by Erren Geraud Kelly

She's a songbird
but she's holding a briefcase
instead of a mike
cos reality won out
over following her heart
she knows how to rock
a power suit

though every time i see her
she would be just as hot in
sequins and platform heels
moving across the stage
like beyonce or janet jackson

sometimes, the world gets in
the way of what we were meant for
everytime she holds her son
she looks at him like its a grammy
or a gold record
but her life couldn't be better

she sifts through her proposals
as i'm reading poetry
imaging figures rolling off her
tongue like notes
dancing like she was born in
the spotlight

FRAGMENT FOR FELIX
by Jason Dean Arnold

Create a spill of individually wrapped candies
Equivalent to the weight of everyone that you love

Hold all of them in your hands
In your mouth
Until they melt away

Then, lose them all again

THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES WILL NOT BE DENIED
by John Grey

She glided down the stairs toward me,
a woman growing old

but not entirely there yet —

there was something
in her bearing —

beauty and grace
acting more on memory
than reality —

a discipline like ballet —
one learned, never forgotten,
no matter how much the bones creak —

"I am Mrs. Han," she said —

if she needed a name
than that was as good as any.
